About ALLEGHENY WEST FOUNDATION

Our History

The Allegheny West Foundation, a Pennsylvania nonprofit Community Development Corporation (CDC), was established in 1968 and officially incorporated in 1974. The primary strategic goals of AWF include:

  • Enhancing the quality of life in the Allegheny West community by increasing the supply of affordable housing, encouraging home maintenance, and offering rental services.
  • Fostering economic growth by supporting business development and revitalizing industrial areas in the Allegheny West region.
  • Creating employment opportunities for adults to secure stable, living wages.
  • Strengthening the community's social fabric by addressing identified issues such as healthcare, education, and other essential services.
  • Encouraging civic engagement through local leadership development.
  • Enhancing the quality of education for youth through work-based learning opportunities, implementing enrichment programs, and basic computer instruction.

For over 45 years, AWF has been dedicated to providing extensive community building and development services to residents and numerous businesses in the industrial and commercial corridors of Allegheny West, a vital source of local employment in Upper North Philadelphia. The community spans census tracts 170 through 173 and 202, bounded by major thoroughfares like Ridge Avenue and 17th Street to the east, and from Lehigh Avenue to areas north of Westmoreland Street.

AWF's corporate headquarters can be found at 2330 W. Allegheny Avenue. Additionally, other AWF offices are situated within the Allegheny West Foundation Business and Community Resource Center at 2850 N. 22nd Street. For inquiries, you can reach us at 215-225-1019.

Our Mission

The mission of the Allegheny West Foundation is to foster economic growth and development in North Central Philadelphia. We aim to provide educational programs for residents within our service area and beyond, act as a link between residents and elected officials, and continuously strive to enhance our community, creating a stronger, safer, and more sustainable environment.

Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteers are the backbone of our organization. We offer a variety of opportunities for individuals and groups to get involved and make a difference in the lives of those we serve.
